Encyclia kennedyi

This is one of David Hunts pictures of Kennedyi. It is a species reluctantly accepted by Mexico, it was named in honor of and after the late Dr. George Kennedy, no direct relationship with the ex-president I suppose. The plant habit and flower shape is identical to Encyclia adenocaula and Encyclia guadalupae, BUT the pink coloration of the lip is consistently suffused through all of the population. You also will know it is Kennedyi when you are coming down the Sierra Madre Occidental headed towards Mazatlan and you find this type of plant. Encyclia Guadalupae is a slightly smaller plant with more numerous but smaller flowers. Weyman had not seen this species in the wild until the mid nineties.
